Object to disturbing mice experiments

Animal Aid has uncovered deeply disturbing experiments on mice that were conducted in the UK and the US. Two of the researchers involved had received funding from the UK Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The dreadful torments the mice endured included:

Being surgically joined together in pairs and, after three weeks, one animal receiving an injection of toxin into their spinal cord in order to damage it. These mice remained joined together until they were later killed.
Mice received an injection of toxin into their brains in order to damage them.

Dear Ms Mitchell

I was shocked to read that the Multiple Sclerosis Society UK funded two researchers whose work, in the UK, involved injecting a toxin into the brains of mice in order to damage them. In addition, one of these researchers was involved with ghoulish experiments in the US wherein two mice were surgically joined together and, three weeks later, one animal had a toxin injected into her spine, to create a lesion.
 
As well as causing terrible animal suffering, animal research is scientifically flawed. Mice differ from us in so many ways and should not be used as ‘research tools’ in experiments. It has been acknowledged that ‘Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a uniquely human disease. It does not occur naturally in any other animal’.

Multiple Sclerosis Society UK’s animal research policy position statement says your policy is ‘in accordance with UK law and the best practice standards’ set by the AMRC. Please could you advise me whether this also applies to research conducted overseas by researchers who you have funded?

Unfortunately, your policy of supporting animal research means that I do not feel able to donate to you. If you policy does change – so that only humane, non-animal research receives your support – then I will be happy to reconsider.
