Sheep being roughly handled at Farmers Fresh slaughterhouse

Animal Aid filmed covertly at Farmers Fresh slaughterhouse in Wrexham, Wales. This is the 16th slaughterhouse in which we have filmed, but the first one located in Wales. Once again, we have brought to light evidence of blatant staff incompetence and brutal treatment of animals.

We found sheep being grabbed by their throats and fleeces and thrown, being dragged by their throats, kneed, kicked, and hands clamped over their muzzles, as well as the misapplication of stunning tongs to the necks, snouts, faces and even the leg of an animal on one occasion. On some occasions we had concerns that sheep may have had their throats cut while fully conscious. The presence of the official vet did not stop the abuse.

This damning footage challenges claims by the Welsh Government of a lack of evidence of serious legal breaches or cruelty inside Welsh slaughterhouses.

The FSA has launched an investigation with a view to prosecution. We very much hope that the slaughterhouse’s management will be held to account, as well as the individual workers.

Please send a message to Lesley Griffiths AM, Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs, to remind her of the urgent need for independently monitored CCTV across all Welsh slaughterhouses.

Please take a minute to personalise the message, so that it will have a greater impact.
